Pete had left water and a few scraps for the pups - but the July heat and circumstance left them little chance without daily support.
Maria and I arrived at Anam Cara, along with Karl and Anglesey (our respective youngin's) - to assess progress and check the pups.
The heat that day contributed to huge decisions on providing a good experience for those attending camp, timing certain projects, and the many promises the site would provide over time.
Not good, the heat; GREAT, the space and potential. It was decided Fall and Spring sessions would best serve our Campers.
We proceeded checking the failure of plantings lost to the heat and dryness. We also determined that the pups must be rescued. Karl in his warrior style took this task upon himself as we yet covered the grounds to determine what was needed.
In extreme heat Karl went under the house again and again - delivering puppies to a box in the cool living area of the camphouse; Anglesey watched over those retrieved. The last pup - Karl's favorite as that one seemed to have protected the others was at last recovered. And, then the choice;where they should go?
No local group had room for the pups, so it was an hour drive to the nearest shelter. Lil Marlen and one other puppy seemed to want to stay with us. With a heavy heart Snootie (the one who kept sticking his nose through holes in the transport box to be stroked) was left at the shelter with his siblings. Something about Lili called to be with us.
On that late July day of heat and evaluating failures and successes at the camp; Lili came to her home with Maria. Loaded with fleas and anemic from same, she had no socialzation and no understanding of being with people. After many baths, and many days of care and inclusion - she began to heal and be strong. Even when a bit weak she held her own, making a place for herself in the family and with Anam Cara.
And, now in her wonderfully impish style - Lili tells us - with determination, care and love all will be well. She epitomizes Anam Cara's vision that in giving one creates a chain of giving; that in giving one is not lessened. By lifting one another up, we are all made strong.
She is "OUR HERO". The little pup that could.
Lil Marlen parallels our own story and has become a living reminder of our commitment and determination. Lil Marlen was left by her Mom with 6 other pups, tucked under the Anam Cara camphouse - to find their way - or not.
On a brutally hot day, Uncle Pete - our builder extraordinaire - let us know that the Mom had been around with the pups scavenging the garbage pile and after a few days disappeared.
UPDATE
Lil Marlen is working to become - "GDC" - Guard Dog Certified as an Autism "helper" dog. Her first lesson will be September 13th, and she will complete her training with a special showing at Reliant Stadium in downtown Houston, Texas - Spring 2010.
